CHOOSING A NURSERY

Choosing a nursery is like choosing a restaurant. Their location, specialties, and customer service policies all matter. How do you make the right choice? Here are some things you might consider.
Tips for using
Garden Catalog Profiles
to choose a nursery

Your garden is unique
You have special gardening needs. You may be shopping for specific plants. Or you need ones for your specific soil type.     Search Garden Catalog Profiles for mail-order nurseries with your specialties. View the drop-down list of specialties if necessary.

Location, location, location
Are you in the Deep South or extreme North? The nursery's location may make a difference. Late-maturing winter squash never ripen in my zone 5 garden.     In such cases, search by location or zone.

Regulations
The state you're in can make a difference. And I don't mean your emotional state. Your state may ban some plants you see offered in catalogs. Out-of-state nurseries can't ship cherry or plum trees to Washington or Oregon. Are you affected by similar regulations?     If so, search Garden Catalog Profiles for mail-order nurseries in your state that have those items.

Know who you're doing business with
How long has the nursery been in business? Does it sell native plants collected from the wild?     If such things concern you, read the Nursery Information under each company.

Payment alternatives
Do you plan on paying by credit card? Not all nurseries accept them. Usually, they don't charge until the order is shipped.     Look for this information under Customer Service.

And if there are problems?

Customer service departments and pre-nuptial agreements have something in common. About the only time you need them is when things go wrong. You want the customer service department to understand your problem and make things right.

Garden Catalog Profiles has details about each nursery's customer service policies. It even tells you how to contact the nursery, whether by mail, phone, fax, or e-mail.

Avoid surprises. Pay attention to the guarantee. If you don't like it, don't order. Some offer unconditional guarantees. Others may only promise to deliver sound, healthy plants or seeds. There may be a deadline and procedure for requesting a replacement or refund.

Information about the guarantee is available under Customer Service.

Let technology work for you
We're in the information age. Let your computer save you time.     Garden Catalog Profiles includes a Save option. So you never have to repeat the same search.

Compare and choose

By now, you've narrowed the field down to just a few nurseries. Given what you've learned, compare them and select just the one(s) that are best for your gardening needs.

Remember, it can be expensive for a nursery to send out a catalog. Request only those that really pique your interest.

The search gives you a list of matching nurseries. Compare the details given under each name.

It's easy if you open multiple reports. Here's how to do that:

  • Click on details for the first nursery on your list.
  • Drag this window over to an empty part of the screen.
  • Repeat these two steps until all the reports are open.
  • Then, you can read and compare them. Or print customized copies of each profile.
  • Choose the nursery by comparing the profiles.

Don't you wish selecting a wireless phone company was that easy?
